Teddy, Hannah & Ishana live in a house boat in Leiden, a very picturesque Dutch city on the western coast of the country. There’s something inherently Dutch about a house boat. In a country with limited space and one that has been battling with the water level through the ages, living on the water somehow fits the pragmatic mentality that the locals are often stereotyped for. However, the house boat of this trio, only resembles Dutchness from the outside, and when stepping inside, the somewhat harsh November weather of The Netherlands ends, and the warmth of their intimate home quickly dries my slightly damp sweater. Hannah opened the door, and even though we’d never met before, it felt completely as if her coming to the door to let me in to the house boat happened on the regular. Teddy is quick to offer a cup of Earl Grey tea, while he himself has his favourite of English Breakfast. Ishana is flying to Dubai the next morning, and I can feel she’s excited to go visit home, but also sad to leave her house boat crew behind. Even though I am guilty of overusing this word, this house boat can only be described as entirely harmonious.
I would have an idea to swap between texts that come from me and texts that come from JEF. so at the bottom of each photograph there is a text, some more intimate and personal, some more activistic and political. So this one could be from JEF and it can either be written by JEFers or an excerpt from a key european federalist speech or anything of the sort?
Having lived in a multi-cultural context for most of my life, there’s something so natural and comforting about coming to a house that shares that same experience. National identities take a back-seat, and instead the personalities of the people themselves take center stage. Since we do not share an entirely identical upbringing, nor the same culture or language, the points of connection become generic and overlaps between our previous experiences more universal. If we want to connect profoundly, this forces us to dig deep into ourselves. And in this more intense curiousity about each-other, a new culture of empathy emerges. A culture characterised by a state of togetherness, a culture for those that are looking for something that transcends nationality. And although many would go against this notion, I feel that the word that most accurately describes this new harmony, is Europe.

We wake up hungover, lazy slippers shifting over the kitchen floor, plates stacked up from the Chinese noodles our Greek friend Lefteris cooked the night before - he was visiting with a couple of friends from the neighbourhood, people whose acquaintance we share in Noorderbeekdwarsstraat 124. I fry up some eggs and thank god for this peperoncino and basil mix, I put it in everything and probably use it more than Sofia herself. She brought a fat bag last time she was visiting her parents in Rome. Morten wouldn’t have gotten up so early but he can’t pass up my already house staple fried eggs. We eat and banter about the loud arguments we’ve had over Danish folklore music. There’s a silent agreement between all of us that the plates will not be washed straight away as everyone shifts into work mode.

Whether it be between the red bricks of our homes, or through activists like JEF, we invite you to build Europe through living it.
What if instead of the manifesto with text and graphics etc like in the newspaper mockup we ended here with a video either introducing JEF or a video of a famous federalist speech… or just audio…. but something audio/visual or both… which I guess would be a video? Because I don’t think that the same ending really works here and video could be a more engaging way to go… Like whatever could be the opposite of this lovely clip of Thatcher…..? We could also record something new…. but then we probably run into time issues
